About Us
Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is a non-profit organization committed to providing high quality primary care, outpatient services, emergent and acute care for residents within our rural communities. In addition to the hospital, it also operates the Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home and Primary Care Center which is attached to the hospital.
Our facility is an acute and long-term health care complex in a rural area. The hospital is certified to operate 24 beds as a general, short-term, acute care facility. We are a vital community health resource for residents of Southern Erie, Wyoming and Northern Cattaraugus Counties. Our service area encompasses 525 square miles, and includes a rural population of 55,000 people, which contribute to approximately 75,000 patient visits to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital each year. Additionally, we are one of our region’s largest employers and a significant economic engine for the community.
Our History:
The hospital and nursing home were named after prominent area residents, Bertrand Chaffee and his wife Jennie B. Richmond Chaffee. The picture to the left is actually Mr. & Mrs. Chaffee’s original residence that was transformed into a hospital after Mr. Chaffee left the home and 12 acres of land to the Village of Springville after his death in 1916. He stated in his will that the land was to be used solely as a hospital and his wife, Jennie, would be able to occupy the estate throughout her lifetime.

“Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home provide acute and long-term care to the residents of Springville and the surrounding region to enhance the health status of residents and respond to community health care needs.”
Our Objective:
To improve the quality and efficiency and healthcare services delivered to our patients by having the necessary diagnostic tools to provide accurate and timely clinical information to our physician partners and providers of primary care services.
Awards & Recognition:
Bertrand Chaffee Hospital may merely be thought of as a modest sized healthcare facility in a rural community. However, the standard of quality that Bertrand Chaffee Hospital achieves is nothing short of exceptional.
Bertrand Chaffee Hospital has received high honors, in which patients have ranked our physicians and nurses as #1 when it comes to communicating with patients in Erie County and Western New York. We also take pride in being #1 in Erie County and #2 in Western New York for patient needs.*
Recently, Bertrand Chaffee Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of ‘Accreditation in Computerized Tomography’ as the result of a survey by the American College of Radiology. The evaluation is conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. This award is given to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards, providing a high level of confidence for patients and referring physicians that only the highest quality of care is being provided.
