Bone Density, or DEXA, is a screening test to measure the density/calcium level in your bones.

This level can determine if you have osteopenia of osteoporosis (low bone mass). At Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, we typically image the hip, back, and sometimes the forearm. The test is relatively simple and non-invasive, and takes approximately 20 minutes,

Bone Density is recommended by the National Osteoporosis Foundation:

  • Women age 65 or older – menopausal or post-menopausal age
  • Men age 70 or older
  • Individuals with a broken bone after the age of 50
  • Medical conditions associated with bone loss (rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Medications that can cause bone loss (steroids)

Depending on the bone density results, follow-up bone density imaging may be needed annually.

Schedule an appointment by calling (716) 592-8169. These studies are done Monday –  Friday

Bone Density scans are done by a registered Technologist and reported by a board certified Radiologist.
